Our family's resolute coach, strong protector, great provider, and accomplished grill-master, Thomas Allan Vasey, 66, passed away unexpectedly on May 27, 2026, in Bakersfield, California. Born on April 24, 1960, in Tucson, Arizona, Tom lived a life defined by dedication to his family, his career, and his passions. His playful sense of humor and generous spirit endeared him to all who knew him.
Family was central to Tom's life. He is survived by his beloved wife, Kate; his children Meagan (Kyle Burdick), Tierney (James Westling), and Joseph; and his cherished grandchildren Naomi, James, and Lucy Rose. He also leaves behind his siblings Andrea Wharrie (John), Danise Vasey, and John Vasey (Elizabeth). Also surviving are the extended McGarey family in-laws. Tom was predeceased by his parents, John and Lesli Vasey.
Tom's commitment to family extended beyond words; it was deeply felt through his actions. When work took him away from home, he reassured his children with lyrics from one of his favorite songs:
"I'm already there
Don't make a sound
I'm the beat in your heart
I'm the moonlight shining down...
I'm the whisper in the wind
And I'll be there 'til the end
Can you feel the love that we share?
Oh, I'm already there"
These words reflect the enduring love he shared with those closest to him—a love that will continue to resonate in their hearts and strengthen them.
A proud graduate of Salpointe Catholic High School in Tucson, Tom continued his education at the University of Arizona. His enduring love for the U of A Wildcats was a hallmark of his life. Professionally, Tom built a distinguished career in the commercial tire industry. His commitment to forging honest relationships with colleagues, customers, and employees won the respect of his employers and led to his advancing to regional leadership positions. His expertise and leadership culminated in forming what he considered the best team he ever led at the Border Tire location in Bakersfield. Known for his compassion and generosity toward his employees, Tom fostered a supportive and successful work environment that left a lasting impression on those who worked alongside him. They truly enjoy a remarkable and enduring family bond, a legacy to treasure.
Beyond his professional accomplishments and devotion to family, Tom found joy in many pursuits. He loved golf and could be found on the course pursuing the elusive "better short game" while enjoying time with friends. A devoted fan of live theater, he embraced the arts with enthusiasm. Our annual viewing of Hamilton will take place as usual on July 4th, but we will miss Tom's robust participation in singing "My Shot." May the memories of Tom's example of living with love and joy bring comfort to all who knew him as they remember a life well-lived and deeply loved.
